General Rules:
Only waterfowl (duck and goose) calls may be entered and all calls must be “hand made.” That term means the major work on the call must be done with tools that require eye-hand coordination by the maker. Two callmakers may participate in the construction of a call, but both must apply eye-hand coordinated work and both must be listed as co-makers. No callmaker may hire or otherwise compensate a co-maker.
In all Decorative Divisions entries must be functional in that they must make a creditable imitation of a waterfowl. Sound, however, will only be a “pass” or “no pass” judgment and will not factor in the judging score. Decorative divisions will be judged on the following criteria, all of equal value:
Workmanship, construction and finish,
Complexity of decoration
Design and Artistic appeal
Overall appearance
In all Working Call Divisions all entries will be blown by a single caller using the same routine and judging will be based on the following criteria all of equal value:
Quack
Feeding sounds
Hail Call
Workmanship, construction and finish
Calls not designed as hen Mallard calls will be judged on similar criteria appropriate for the intended species.
Calls may only be entered by the maker(s) even though they may not be the current owner.
Materials permitted in each Class/Division are more specifically limited in the descriptions that follow. In all Class/Divisions duck calls may include any material as wedges or similar parts of the guts and any material (other than as specified) as a reed. Goose calls may include any material for toneboards, wedges, reeds and gutserts including those not made by the Callmaker.
Callmakers are encouraged to provide a stand for their calls, and may include a presentation box. Stands, presentation boxes, logos or other callmaker marks will not be considered in the judging. Callmakers are also encouraged to include a 3” x 5” card describing the most important features of the call, its construction, function or other feature that may be of interest to the general public viewing the call. Callmakers may also include business cards for interested persons to pick up during the public viewing.
All entries must include an entry form and the entry fee of $15.00 and must be received by the Competition Committee Chair:
Ed Glenn
P.O. Box 428, 105 Laurel Lane
Boardman, OR 97818
prior to Thursday, August 13, 2009, or may be delivered to the Oregon Waterfowl Festival, Polk County, Oregon, Fairgrounds on Friday evening, August 14, 2009. Each entry must also be accompanied by a separate Entry Form.
Judging will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 15 and entries with judging results will be on public display as soon thereafter as possible. Entries will be released at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16.
This is a non-profit competition and all entry fees will be returned as cash prizes to callmakers. The first entry in any Class/Division will be used, to the extent necessary, to provide ribbons for awards listed below. The entry fees for each second and subsequent two calls entered thereafter in that Class/Division will be added to the “Prize Pool” which will pay cash prizes to one-half of the entries in that Class/Division. For example: If 9 calls are entered in any Class/Division, cash prizes will be awarded to the top 4 entries. If 10 calls are entered in that Class/Division, cash awards will be awarded to the top 5 entries. See an example of the cash prize formula here. There is no limit on the number of entries a Callmaker can enter.
All entries mailed or otherwise shipped to the Committee Chair must include return postage. Otherwise the entry will be offered for sale in the Silent Auction. Calls entered in the silent auction will start a minimum bid (not less than $15) determined by the Competition Committee. Calls will be considered sold at the “Buy It Now” price the Callmaker enters on the Entry Form.
To the extent possible, photos and scores will be entered on the Internet on Saturday evening, August 15, 2009, and arrangements can be made for absentee bidders to bid on Silent Auction calls.
