Northern Pacific Railroad Caboose Project

These are a couple of hay loaders lifting NP 1409 onto a farm equipment trailer.  It was obvious to everyone that the trailer was severely overloaded, so a new plan was hatched on the spot.

A conventional lowboy trailer was pressed into service but since its deck was higher than the farm trailer, we'd have to set the logs right down on the deck.

To get the log to seat down flat on the lowboy's deck, we had to trip the logs back from their support under the bolster, a risk we simply had to take.

As it turned out, the frame of the caboose would rest on the rear deck of the lowboy with just a couple of 2x6 blocks under the logs on the main deck.

This is most of the dozen volunteers who helped with the loading, most of whom brought some kind of equipment with them.

The next day was bright and sunny and we could get a good measure of our height.  We had a 16'2" overpass to go under and measured 15'10".

Here we go, west bound on Interstate 84 out of Pendleton, Oregon, headed for home in Boardman some 45 miles away.

That's Frances and me at the weigh-in in Boardman.  The crew had a pool on how much she weighed - 18,444 lbs.  Frances weighs quite a bit less than that.

I'll add more photos as warranted over the next couple of years as restoration work progresses
